Black Mesa Review

Updated: Jan 16, 2021

Well... they finally did it.

Whether it's release coincides with Half-Life: Alyx or there being a giant conspiracy, I'm glad that it is FINALLY out of Early Access. And not to pull the terrible joke but my goodness was it worth the wait.

Given Crowbar Collective's access to the source code and various proprietary models, it is no surprise that this game feels like a AAA game trapped inside the 2004 Source engine. Everything from rectangular character hitboxes to baked lighting (a la Quake) and the endlessly reused HL2 citizen/vortigaunt/kleiner/barney animations are, in the short term, distracting to say the least. However, this is offset by the countless (and I do mean that) original models, animations, AI, scripted entities, etc. that make the game take on a life of it's own.

CC are also releasing (or, rather, have released) a major overhaul to the HECU soldiers (which were just tweaked Combine AI to begin with) so that they aren't nearly as ruthless and/or stupid, depending on how they're feeling.

Still, a large problem of this game is the use of such an outdated version of the Source engine. Their workarounds for this are very well done and are too numerous to list here, but there is still a little bit of that old rickety engine appearing every now and then.
