Deep Rock Galactic Review

Deep Rock Galactic is a four-player cooperative PvE game that is a clever and unique combination of Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2. On the TF2 side, we have an FPS class system complete with engineer, scout, and gunner (read "heavy") as well as a wholly unique class called "driller" and non-violent level objectives. On the L4D2 side we have a four player co-op system that includes reviving and a strong PvE emphasis. Teamwork is essential for navigating the levels on higher difficulties, and the game places a strong emphasis on camaraderie and communication.

You play as proper fantasy Dwarves in a sci-fi setting, that is almost an incredibly light-hearted version of Warhammer 40,000, whose job is to mine resources on the planet Hoxxes for the eponymous company Deep Rock Galactic. From the lobby, players can select missions in different regions of the planet with unique objectives such as fracking, egg harvesting, extermination, or industrial espionage. Upon loading a level, players can easily see what makes this game different from both TF2 and L4D2:

The levels are procedurally generated and entirely destructible!

An example of a level from the Radiation Exclusion Zone.

That's right! No two levels are alike, so it's a somewhat fresh experience every time you drop to the planet. This is one of the best aspects of the entire game, as level memorization just isn't possible and unique problem solving has to be incorporated every time you play. So, if you are tired of playing the same Left 4 Dead maps over and over, then definitely give this game a try; it has much more variety and a more active community.

The four classes each have unique weapons that lets them excel in specialized areas. For example, the driller has elemental damage based weapons and an industrial drill to effortlessly dig through the voxelated environment. The scout has a grappling hook which can help him reach high places, and a flare gun to help light up the dark cavernous areas. The engineer has (to no one's surprise) a turret that they can build help automatically fend off aliens (which I will talk about in a moment). The gunner has a permanent zipline they can set up that all classes can use, even when holding onto large chunks of ore. A typical game will have each of the four players play the different classes, but occasionally your teammates will be jokers and pick all scouts. If I were to have any constructive criticism, it's that this game is in desperate need of a fifth class for variety and player choice/consequence (I humbly suggest a medic class).

Mining on Hoxxes is not without its dangers; the native fauna (and sometimes flora) are quite aggressive and do not tolerate territorial intrusions. The majority of the resistance will be from the normal glyphid grunts, pictured here:

Alone they aren't a threat; it's when there are dozens of them that problems start happening. If the grunts weren't bad enough, there are much stronger enemies that appear as well. Some of them dig, some of them explode, some of them shoot, and some of them do all three. And finally, even though Deep Rock Galactic owns Hoxxes, they are not alone...

What makes this game so absolutely enjoyable to play is easily the friendly and supportive community. The game does not rank you and there is no ELO. Players are not encouraged to compete, and because of that the type of people that play and are attracted to this game are extremely friendly and patient. If you are not a team player, you will fail at this game. If you are worried about toxic players, I can attest that in my 300+ hours of playtime, only 2 of those hours were anywhere near miserable.

Absolutely check this game out. It has a unique premise and is just dang fun to play!
