Return of the Obra Dinn Review

After Lucas Pope's previous sensation, Papers, Please, I was shocked at how little attention this game got. But, alas, it is not my place to complain about the tastes of the masses.

A ship lost at sea drifts back to terrestrial waters, and it is up to our unnamed main character to investigate what went down. The game takes place entirely on the boat (unless you are a clever boy), and the story is told in flashbacks of characters the instant they died. Clues are laid out within these scenes that help the player identify all 60-some passenger and crew aboard the Obra Dinn.

Lucas Pope (or his artist) seems to have an eye for the dithering effect, because despite this game being in only 2 colors, so much detail is brought forth from the expertly done lack of detail. All in all, the art style is very unique.

Unfortunately, I did have a tough time finishing the game. Some of the crewmembers proved difficult to identify, so I resorted to a walkthrough. Perhaps you might not have such a hard time yourself.

If you loved The Witness, and enjoy search and finds then this game is 100% up your alley. It's a pretty cheap game with a lot of thought put into it.

8/10
