Space Marshals Review

Updated: Oct 17, 2020

While many people complain about terrible mobile games and their endless micro-transactions, I am always on the defense with examples of good mobile games such as Space Marshals.

It's a top-down sci-fi western shooter with stealth elements and it feels like a real game that you would find on Steam or PS4. You play as the titular Space Marshals who are trying to piece together a mystery regarding a space prison break. During the game you acquire better weapons and armor as well as some neat hats for you character to wear. The less times you die, the better equipment you get to unlock.

The graphics are very impressive for a mobile game, however it was very obvious to me that all the props work on a grid system not unlike an old school raster-graphics game.

The game has two types of levels: Regular mission levels and time-based levels. The regular mission levels take up the majority of the game and are usually focused on getting from point A to point B or taking out a targeted individual. In the timed missions you have to kill x amount of "High Value Targets" to end the level. The faster you do it, the more points you get.

The biggest problems that the game has are based around the item unlocking system. Whenever you complete a level you get to choose one piece of equipment to unlock for your character, whether it be a gun or a grenade or a hat. However, you only get to pick ONE, which means that if you want to unlock all item you have to play through the levels at least four times each. On top of that, each item requires that you hadn't died a certain number of times in the level. Usually the better the item, the less times that you needed to have not died during the level.

Despite my gripes, overall it was a pretty fun experience and was definitely refreshing to see a game like this on the mobile market. If you guys are interested in changing the mobile market for the better then please pay full price for this game. There's also a sequel out so maybe I'll review that in the future.
