The Witness Review

Updated: Jan 16, 2021

The Witness is a game about... something. Probably.

It's a puzzle game, and I really mean it. It's been a good while since I played it but I believe when I beat it I had done over 200 puzzles! If you are a puzzle game fanatic then you'll probably like this more than I did.

The game looks gorgeous. It looks like Nintendo and a renaissance artist did a collaboration. There are so many uses of vibrant colors that you could take a screenshot of almost any area and use it as wallpaper.

The most impressive part of the game is its use of perspective. There are so many finely crafted set pieces and puzzles that require you to look at it from just the right angle. It also has a secret area with an awesome use of Bink Video.

This game is, sadly, not perfect and I do have a few gripes with it. There were some puzzles that I couldn't figure out (they had to do with sound) and I eventually had to resort to a walkthrough because the game does become tedious after a while (it also doesn't help that I have ADHD). I'm also going to add that some users might find the game to be a bit pretentious but personally I wasn't bothered by the recordings until the very end of the game.

This is definitely a great step up from Braid for Jonathan Blow and his team. I would highly recommend people who like puzzles to play it. If you liked Safecracker then you'll like this game, too.
