The Witness is about perspective. The literal perspective is quite easy to see. There are a wealth of puzzles that are only solvable from a certain angle on the map at both large and small scales. The figurative comes from the various tapes and movies hidden in the world. They tell stories from folklore, contain lectures from the 90's, and there is even the end of Nostalghia (also about perspective). The game shows how humans can progress in maturity by learning to be flexible with their perspective of the world. The player can solve more puzzles once they learn how to view a puzzle in the right way, just as individuals can overcome the insurmountable by restructuring their worldview.
