I have recently had the displeasure of working with 3DS Max. I don't know where it went wrong for me; it was either the professor or just the program itself. The fact that 3DS Max's UI is dated is not in and of itself a problem as I am quite familiar with navigating GUIs from the 90s and 80s, it is the fact (and by fact I mean opinion) that the UI is unnecessarily clunky and confusing that makes it an absolute headache to use. Literally, I had an aching in my cranium just from staring at its teal-blue-green ugliness. It made me feel really bad for the people who work at Ghost Ship Games (Deep Rock Galactic).
And, to be fair to Autodesk, Maya does look much MUCH better and I look forward to trying that program out.
